WiFi on Finnish VR InterCity train
And now for comparison, some quick tests of the open train wifi from around Lahti in a “working compartment” (seats 1–7, coach 1) of an InterCity 5 operated by VR in Finland. Feels quite decent. (Bicycle transport is also good on this train.)

Good enough for SSH not to be disconnected, but over 15 % packet loss and 500 ms latency with quite some jitter (judging from StDev).

Connessione Wi-Fi di Italo
Fino a qualche tempo fa, la connessione a internet su Italotreno NTV risultava sempre inaffidabile per me, tanto da rinunciare a usarla.
Oggi, alle ore 8, a 300 km/h fra le nebbie milanesi, nella carrozza 8 quasi tutto vuota del Milano-Napoli, mi è andata meglio. Usare mosh per IRC comunque non guasta.

Settimana europeista
✔ Scoppiare in lacrime al prorompere dell’Inno alla gioia alla partenza della marcia per l’Europa il 25 marzo, 60º dei trattati di Roma.
✔Chiacchierare per ore con due ex europarlamentari italofone non elette in Italia; fare amicizia a Roma con una ragazza tedesca che vive a Trento ma per anni avrei potuto incontrare a Milano; far conoscenza con cinque finlandesi in una sola serata romana JEF.
✔Imbucarmi a una o due conferenze.
✔ Spazzare il pavimento della sede CIFE.
✔ Cantare un centinaio di volte l’inno alla gioia sparato in loop in varie versioni compreso CD della Berliner Philarmoniker 2/1989 e 2/1990.
✔ Scampare per un soffio all’elezione al direttivo dei GFE Milano.

Congettura: la capacità di aiutare chi ne ha bisogno è inversamente proporzionale al desiderio di aiutare i deboli in quanto tali. Certa sinistra cade sempre nel tranello di scambiare per debole chi meglio si dipinge come vittima, cioè (di norma) il più forte (a piangere).
Scrivevo qualche settimana fa a un amico che si chiedeva come far avanzare una conversazione con degli strenui oppositori:
Il senso generale del suo messaggio è che tu hai denti per difenderti da solo (e li hai usati) e quindi non sei degno di essere difeso da altri. È una situazione in cui ti sei trovato spesso: siccome tu non porgi l’altra guancia, passi per il cattivo; non so se sia un difetto connaturato a certa sinistra, che nella speranza di difendere i “deboli” finisce per aiutare sempre e solo chi meglio si traveste da vittima.
Sicuramente il suo ragionamento non ha alcuna validità razionale o politica, dato che mette sullo stesso piano accese argomentazioni (le tue) e accuse personali infamanti (che sono prima di tutto inutili al progresso di una discussione razionale, e in secondo luogo potenzialmente illegali). Peraltro è sommamente ridicolo che sostenga allo stesso tempo che non hai risposto abbastanza (sul merito) e che hai già risposto fin troppo. Su questa base non è possibile alcuna conversazione, quindi lasciar perdere è senz’altro opportuno (anche se può essere un peccato).
La frase in grassetto mi è tornata in mente parecchie volte in queste settimane, e credo di averne trovato parecchi riscontri nella vita quotidiana.
Sul rapporto inscindibile fra democrazia e razionalità, in quanto presupposti di politica efficace e (sano/civile) discorso pubblico che facciano avanzare la società, hanno scritto cose interessanti Gustavo Zagrebelsky e ovviamente John Stuart Mill.
Ioannina clause, the 2017-04-01 switch
Today in the EU Council: «the new rule of qualified majority becomes compulsory». On April 1st, how ironic.
The Ioannina clause has always fascinated me, since 2002 or so when I think I first learnt about it. The idea is that a handful goverments can prevent the others from discussing something (for two years) if there’s the risk that they might otherwise agree on a decision (by qualified majority). A clear admission that we don’t want the EU to work.
And there’s still unanimity of course.
Let’s hope for the European Parliament Committee on Constitutional Affairs (Verhofstadt report)… Time to dismantle the Council as it is now, and make the EU democratic as a federation needs to be.
