Settimana europeista

✔ Scoppiare in lacrime al prorompere dell’Inno alla gioia alla partenza della marcia per l’Europa il 25 marzo, 60º dei trattati di Roma.

✔Chiacchierare per ore con due ex europarlamentari italofone non elette in Italia; fare amicizia a Roma con una ragazza tedesca che vive a Trento ma per anni avrei potuto incontrare a Milano; far conoscenza con cinque finlandesi in una sola serata romana JEF.

✔Imbucarmi a una o due conferenze.

✔ Spazzare il pavimento della sede CIFE.

✔ Cantare un centinaio di volte l’inno alla gioia sparato in loop in varie versioni compreso CD della Berliner Philarmoniker 2/1989 e 2/1990.

✔ Scampare per un soffio all’elezione al direttivo dei GFE Milano.

Ioannina clause, the 2017-04-01 switch

Today in the EU Council: «the new rule of qualified majority becomes compulsory». On April 1st, how ironic.

The Ioannina clause has always fascinated me, since 2002 or so when I think I first learnt about it. The idea is that a handful goverments can prevent the others from discussing something (for two years) if there’s the risk that they might otherwise agree on a decision (by qualified majority). A clear admission that we don’t want the EU to work.

And there’s still unanimity of course.

Let’s hope for the European Parliament Committee on Constitutional Affairs (Verhofstadt report)… Time to dismantle the Council as it is now, and make the EU democratic as a federation needs to be.
